Matteo Berrettini’s tournament starts off well in the Masters 1000 in Shanghai. The Italian won in two sets over the Australian Chris O’Connell with a score of 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (8-6) in just over two hours of play. In the next round Berrettini will find Holger Rune, for a rematch of the match in Cincinnati where the Dane triumphed in three sets.
Berrettini, fresh from withdrawing from the Tokyo tournament due to abdominal problems, demonstrates that he has recovered his condition. The 28-year-old Roman wins his first victory of the year in a Masters 1000. In the first set, in particular, the Italian comes back from 1-5 in the tie-break. With today’s victory, Berrettini reiterates his record-breaking feeling with tie-breaks in the current season: he has won 14 of the last 15 played.
