Fugees: Lauryn Hill prosecuted for fraud by Pras Michel, a week before the group’s tour

Nothing is going well between the Fugees. Pras Michel, one of the founders of the cult group of the 1990s, attacks Lauryn Hill, the singer and star of the trio completed by Wyclef Jean. He is suing her in particular for “fraud and breach of contract”, after the cancellation of a large part of the reunion tour in 2023.

In his complaint filed in Manhattan court, Pras Michel accuses Lauryn Hill of having misused the group’s finances and of having unilaterally taken control of them. The singer notably refused an offer of 5 million dollars to perform at the American festival Coachella.

He also criticizes Lauryn Hill for her “chronic lateness” to concerts and the cancellation of part of their tour, launched in 2023 in memory of the trio’s glorious era in the 1990s. According to the musician’s lawyer, the singer would have “taken advantage of the difficult legal situation of (Pras) Michel, and manipulated him into signing an unfair contract for the tour The Fugees 2023 ».

Pras was convicted in 2023 in federal court in Washington for his role in a “vast conspiracy to influence senior government officials” led by a Malaysian financier. He allegedly used part of the $100 million received to finance Barack Obama’s campaign in 2012.

Lauryn Hill denounced the lawsuits as “baseless” and “full of false claims and unjustified attacks.” According to her, Michel Pras notably fails to say that he was overpaid “for the last tour and that he did not repay the substantial loans (that she gave him) granted as a gesture of goodwill,” she declared in a press release sent to AFP.
