From pigeons to Manneken Pis: Brussels Airlines lets the public vote on a newly painted aircraft

Brussels Airlines is letting the public vote on the design of a newly painted aircraft. From 900 submitted creations, an internal jury made a selection of fifteen designs, from Manneken Pis to pigeon racing to Mercator. The general public can determine the top 5 from this. Voting is open until October 11.

From professional designers to students in art schools: the designers are as diverse as the designs for the livery of the Airbus A320 itself, says Brussels Airlines.

The most popular categories among the entries were cycling, art nouveau, Jean-Michel Folon and Adolphe Sax, as well as cartoon characters such as Lucky Luke and Marsupilami.

“We assessed the designs based on some important criteria: the new Belgian Icon must be different from all the previous icons, it must be about something that all Belgians can be proud of and that is also recognized abroad,” says marketing director Michel Moriaux in a press release.

The top 15 is now visible on the Brussels Airlines website. Voting is open until October 11. The five designs with the most votes will be presented to an external jury. It includes some deserving Belgians, such as Alex Callier (Hooverphonic), Philippe Geluck (designer of Le Chat), Gabrielle Szwarcenberg (designer of the Brussels Airlines uniforms) and many others. The jury will choose the final design on October 14. The aircraft will be presented to the general public in the spring of 2025.

Brussels Airlines currently has three ‘Belgian Icons’ in its fleet: the Tintin aircraft ‘Rackham’, the Tomorrowland aircraft ‘Amare’ and ‘Trident’, the official aircraft of the national football teams, the Red Devils and the Red Flames.
