The work port desire explores how violence arises from fear of what is different

Violence arises from fear of what is different. Lack of tolerance and rejection translate into aggression, both socially and intimately.says playwright Mariana Giménez, who explores these themes in port desirea work that premieres today at the Juan Ruiz de Alarcón Theater of the University Cultural Center (CCU).

“The montage is inspired by A streetcar named desireby Tenne-ssee Williams, but introduces a subversive twist: Blanche becomes a homosexual male character. This significant change not only redefines the original plot, but also transforms the perception of desire on stage,” explained the director and actress in an interview with The Day.

The challenge of adapting a masterpiece to a contemporary vision offers the opportunity to explore universal themes from new perspectives, given that the classics maintain a timeless relevance.

By turning Blanche into a man, Giménez seeks to examine the expression of identity and desire from a new place. This adaptation is relevant because identity and the way humans choose to express themselves are vital issues..

A striking aspect of the original work – in the playwright’s words – is the phrase “I have always depended on the kindness of strangers.

This statement resonates deeply, as intimacy becomes a field of constant questions. There is no social order that clearly divides between the oppressed and the oppressors; Power systems tend to be more complex, and the search for personal identity must be considered in this context.Giménez added.

The main theme revolves around why we destroy what we love, since family and couple relationships should be based on love and support.

The plot tells how Mariano arrives at the house of his sister Isabel, who is married to Pau. This new family environment represents a microcosm of society, where aspects of personal identity must be silenced due to rejection.

The setting is a house that becomes a symbol of resistance. Giménez stressed that “we chose this space because the story of Kowalski (now called Pau) is that of a migrant who arrives in Mexico to look for a new life and escape from his past.

This home represents refuge, but also the result of a social and economic moment in which many struggle to find a place of their own.

Giménez highlighted that in contemporary society, violence is intrinsically related to the fear of what is different. This fear generates intolerance, discrimination and rejection. When tolerance or understanding is not fostered, the process of self-determination is complicated.

The work also includes live music and visual arts, performed by actors Verónica Bravo, Pablo Marín, Álex Gesso, Cristian Magaloni, Natanael Ríos, Sunem Cedillo and Santiago Alfaro, which adds a layer of complexity to the discourse.

Pau’s punk band becomes a means of expression. Through their music, the characters channel everything they feel and think. This approach allows us to explore the lives of those who cannot fit into the system.Giménez added.

“The character of Mariano, equivalent to Blanche, is located in the 1980s, just before the arrival of HIV. At that time, expressing yourself differently was even more complicated for those who belonged to the LGBT+ community.

“The world seems designed to foster competition and pressure, which often leads us to be worse versions of ourselves. In this sense, we not only revisit a classic, but we introduce a narrative queerpromoting dialogue about identity and sexual diversity in a contemporary theatrical context.”

With production by Teatro UNAM, the performances of port desire They are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 6 p.m. at the Juan Ruiz de Alarcón Theater of the CCU (3000 Insurgentes Sur Avenue, Ciudad Universitaria). The ticket costs 150 pesos with 50 percent discounts for students, teachers and seniors (with Inapam credentials). Ends on November 24.
