Impact of automation on the labor market

• Between 26 and 38 percent of jobs in Latin America and the Caribbean could be exposed to generative artificial intelligence (GenAI).

• Due to current GenAI capabilities, 2 to 5 percent of jobs are at risk of being fully automated.

• In the United States, around 45,000 port workers held a three-day strike at the beginning of the month in which, although they demanded wage increases, they also protested against the automation that has come to replace labor in their sector.

• Last year’s strikes by actors’ and writers’ guilds in Hollywood were also to protect their creative work from AI.

• Heather Long, columnist for The Washington Post, stated that the dockworkers’ strike is one of the first battles of well-paid workers against advanced automation. There will be many more to come and added: Robots are coming for all of us.
