The energy expert calculated: This electricity contract is the cheapest

Director of the Energy Agency Antti Paananen monitored electricity consumption in his home for a year and found out which contract would have been the cheapest.

Paananen started the comparison of the model by comparing the contracts in the sähkonhinta.fi service maintained by the Energy Agency. The comparison included stock exchange electricity, a one-year fixed-price contract, hybrid contracts with a consumption effect and contracts valid for an indefinite period, for which he took into account the changes made by the sellers during the year.

Paananen was left out of the calculations temporary discounts and transfer fees.

Paananen did not compare special contracts in which the customer can, for example, choose the exchange price for part of the electricity consumption and the fixed price for the part.

The calculation looked at the annual consumption of 16,500 kilowatt hours of Paananen’s own small house with electric heating. A little more than half of Paananen’s household consumption takes place between ten in the evening and seven in the morning.

Paanas also has a habit of checking stock exchange electricity prices for the next day in the evenings. Based on that, he decides which machines are running in the home.

And which contract model was the best? Average exchange electricity. It would have cost 1,280 euros on average, even though the period was hit by the severe frosts of November and February. January’s share alone would have been 320 euros with exchange electricity.

The differences between contracts based on exchange electricity were small. This supports the choice of stock exchange electricity if you can’t bear to focus on the details.

Hybrid is also cheap

The hybrid deal was almost as cheap. It would have cost 1,320 euros.

Regarding hybrid contracts, there were clear differences between the sellers. The difference between the most expensive and the cheapest contract would have been 590 euros. However, the cheapest would have been a fixed-year hybrid contract offered by one seller. Its cost would have been 1,170 euros.

The most expensive would have been an indefinite contract. Its average price would have been 2,290 euros. There were big differences in these contracts too: the cheapest would have paid 1,600 euros.

According to Paananen, the results cannot be directly generalized to all households. He has appliances that use electricity, such as a hot water heater, underfloor heating, and even charging the car takes a lot of electricity.

Paananen points out that it is not worth looking at individual price spikes when it comes to exchange electricity.
