Rescue chamois caught in a trap in the deep forest

On October 11, Mr. Phan Van Trung, officer of Tam Hop Forest Protection Management Station (Tuong Duong District Protection Forest Management Board), and the working group went on patrol in the deep forest area bordering the Vietnam-Laos border, discovered a male antelope caught in a trap.

According to Mr. Trung, the animal’s front legs were hanging from the cable in the bushes, constantly struggling but unable to escape. The patrol team approached and cut off the cable in one minute. Next, the staff used medical alcohol to treat the wound on the left leg of the chamois lying down to avoid infection, monitored it for a few dozen minutes and then released it back into the forest.

In addition to rescuing the chamois, the patrol team also discovered a forest muntjac (muntjac) caught in a trap that had long died, and removed more than 50 large cable traps used to trap animals.

Chamois scientific name Capricornis milneedwardsiibelongs to group IB, list of endangered and rare forest plants and animals, prioritized for protection. This is an animal belonging to the bovine family, of the even-toed order, endemic in Southeast Asia, mainly in Indochina peninsula countries such as Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand…

In Vietnam, their numbers are currently decreasing due to hunting and trapping, and their habitat is narrowed and fragmented.
