Judge halts controversial counting rule in Georgia

On the first day of early voting for the Presidential election im US state of Georgia A court ruling ensures a surprising start to the election: A judge has temporarily suspended a controversial election rule for the manual counting of all ballot papers. The rule was overturned in court on Tuesday, three Democratic Party representatives said.

“From the beginning, this rule was an attempt to delay the election results and sow doubt about the outcome. Our democracy has become stronger because of the decision to block it,” said a joint statement from Quentin Fulks, campaign spokesman for the Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, Monica Guardiola, co-director of the Democratic Party National Organizing Committee (DNC) – and Congresswoman Nikema Williams.

Controversial regulation passed in September

The controversial regulation was approved by the state’s election supervisory authority on September 20th with a 3-2 majority, with the majority coming from three allies of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. Trump lost the 2020 election in Georgia to Democrat Joe Biden and made unfounded allegations of voter fraud.
