On November 1, 2024, Nerina Santorius will be the new curator and head of the Impressionism collection at the Barberini Museum. She succeeds Daniel Zamani, who held the position until summer 2024.
Zamani came to the Barberini Museum in 2018. He is now artistic director and member of the board at the Frieder Burda Museum in Baden-Baden.
“We are pleased to have found a competent colleague in Nerina Santorius who has many years of experience as a curator of large exhibitions,” quoted the museum director Ortrud Westheider in a press release. Santorius has “in-depth knowledge of 19th century French art”. In the future, she will head the collection of impressionist works at the Barberini Museum.
According to Barberini, Nerina Santorius studied art history and Italian philology in Trier, Salerno and Madrid and received her doctorate at the Free University of Berlin on the subject of ugliness in 19th century French sculpture. From 2004 she was an annual scholarship holder at the German Forum for Art History in Paris. From 2009 to 2015 she worked at the Städel Museum in Frankfurt in the modern art department. There, among other things, she took over the project management for the anniversary exhibition “Monet and the Birth of Impressionism” in 2015. (2015).
Nerina Santorius most recently worked as a curator at the Kunsthalle Munich, where she organized exhibitions such as “You are Faust. Goethe’s Drama in Art” (2018), “Fantastically real. Belgian Modernism from Ensor to Magritte” (2021/2022), “Silent Rebels. Polish Symbolism around 1900” (2022) and “Myth of Spain. Ignacio Zuloaga 1870–1945” (2023) curated.
The retrospective “Maurice de Vlaminck. Rebel of Modernity” (until January 12, 2025). In 2025, the house will show 100 works by more than 70 artists of geometric abstraction in the 20th century in the exhibition “Kosmos Kandinsky” (February 15 to May 18, 2025), as well as a large overview show of the impressionist Camille Pissarro under the title “ With an open mind. Pissarro’s Impressionism” (June 14 to September 28, 2025) and the exhibition “Unicorn. The mythical beast in art”, which is dedicated to the iconography of the unicorn through over 100 works (October 25, 2025 to February 1, 2026).
