The world reacts to the assassination of Sinwar: “A good day for Israel, the USA and the world”
The assassination of Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, by IDF forces provoked a wide wave of reactions from leaders and diplomats around the world. The reactions reflect broad support for the assassination, along with calls to take advantage of the opportunity to promote a ceasefire and the release of the abductees. The President of the United States, Joe Biden He stated: “This is a good day for Israel, for the United States and for the world.” Afterwards, he spoke with Prime Minister Netanyahu and congratulated him on the achievement. In a comprehensive statement, Biden elaborated: “Israel informed my national security team that in an operation they carried out in Gaza apparently killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. DNA tests have now confirmed that Sinwar is dead.” The American president emphasized Sinwar’s responsibility for the October 7 massacre: “As the leader of the terrorist organization Hamas, Sinwar was responsible for the deaths of thousands of Israelis, Palestinians, Americans and citizens from over 30 countries. He was the mastermind behind the massacre, rape and kidnappings on October 7.” .

Biden went on to detail US involvement in efforts to locate Sinwar since the outbreak of the war: “Shortly after the October 7 massacre, I ordered our special operations and intelligence personnel to work side by side with their Israeli counterparts to locate and track Sinwar and other Hamas leaders hiding in Gaza. . With the help of our intelligence, the IDF continuously pursued Hamas leaders, took them out of their hiding places and forced them to flee.” The American president even compared the historic moment to the killing of Osama bin Laden in 2011.

Biden emphasized Israel’s right to eliminate the leadership of Hamas, noting: “Israel had every right to eliminate the leadership of Hamas and its military structure. Hamas is no longer capable of carrying out another October 7.” However, he also called for taking advantage of the opportunity to end the war: “There is now an opportunity for a ‘day after’ in Gaza without Hamas in power, and for a political settlement that will provide a better future for both Israelis and Palestinians.”

US Vice President Kamala Harris joined the call to take advantage of the opportunity: “Israel has the right to defend itself, Hamas has been destroyed and its leadership eliminated. This brings us a moment and an opportunity for a ceasefire in Gaza, the release of the abductees, and an end to the suffering of the Gazans. It’s time to start the day after. We will not give up on these goals and I will always be committed to a future of peace, respect and security for all.”

The US national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, emphasized the significant contribution of American intelligence: “The intelligence that the US provides to Israel helped it pursue and eliminate senior Hamas officials, including Sinwar. His death is a renewed opportunity that we want to take advantage of.”

The US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, stated that “in the coming days, the US will redouble its efforts to end the conflict”. This statement signals the US’s intention to use the momentum created by Sinwar’s elimination to promote a political solution to promote the end of the war and a hostage deal.

The US ambassador to Israel, Jack Lowe, defined Sinwar’s death as “a measure of justice”, but mentioned: “It does not bring back the innocent victims of October 7 – citizens of Israel, the United States and more than 30 other countries, And not the citizens in Gaza behind whom he hid.” He called for the release of the remaining abductees and to focus on “a better future in Gaza without Hamas rule.”

Matthew Miller, spokesman for the US State Department, described Sinwar as a “despicable terrorist who is responsible for the deaths of thousands in Israel and around the world.” He emphasized: “His decision to start a war on October 7 brought a year of tragedy in the Middle East. His legacy is redeemed in blood.” Miller added: “In the past year, he refused efforts to end the war, return the abductees and accept the cease-fire proposal agreed to by the Security Council.” He called for a change of course, saying: “It’s time for a change of course. We will redouble our efforts to return the abductees, end the war, restore Gaza and the lives of Gazans.”

Outside the US, most of the reactions supported the assassination and saw it as a positive step towards regional peace. The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, responded by saying that “justice has been done” and called on Hamas to “disarm, release hostages, and reach a ceasefire in Gaza.” He emphasized Because Hamas “will have no part in a future administration” in Gaza.

France’s foreign minister, Jean-Noel Barro, joined the international consensus: “The terrorist organization Hamas suffered a fatal blow, Sinwar was an obstacle to peace.” However, Barrow emphasized that “only a political solution will guarantee Israel’s security.” The leader of the largest right-wing party in the Netherlands, Geert Wilders, also expressed succinct support for the liquidation operation when he wrote “All the best” in response to the IDF’s tweet about liquidation.
