The Norwegian airline transports biofuel from Finnish St1 for the needs of the Norwegian Defense Forces for one million business trips

Norwegian 15 percent of the fuel used by the Defense Forces on their domestic scheduled flights will be bio-based.

The Finnish Defense Forces organized a tender for the supply of biofuel, which was won by the low-cost airline Norwegian. In turn, it has agreed to purchase biofuel from the Finnish company St1, Norwegian and St1 say in their press release.

The agreement applies only to Norwegian’s planes and flights on work and business trips of the Norwegian Defense Forces.

According to the parties to the agreement, the fuel is procured from St1’s biorefinery in Gothenburg, Sweden. The defense forces have demanded that refueling takes place in Norway. The Norwegian fuel supplier is the AFSN company.

On Thursday, Ålesund’s Vigra Airport carried out the first biofuel refueling of a Norwegian aircraft for the flight of the Norwegian Defense Forces.

Agreement cover more than one million business trips by 2028.

According to the Norwegian defense sector’s climate and environmental strategy, the sector’s goal is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 20 percent by 2030.

“Availability of biofuels is important for the climate, and at the same time we want to increase the reliability of fuel supply. The defense sector wants to facilitate the increase in the production of this type of fuel in Norway”, says the commander of the defense forces Eirik Kristoffersen in the bulletin.

Biopolttoaine according to the agreement, covers 15 percent of the defense sector’s total consumption of more than 250,000 business trips in 2024. It is estimated to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 2,000 tons this year, the parties say.

Norwegian has announced that it aims to cut 45 percent of its carbon emissions by 2030.
