Freiburg defeated Augsburg thanks to a goal rush before the break

SC Freiburg has impressively underlined its claim to a place in the top third of the Bundesliga table. Thanks to an efficient first half, the sports club defeated FC Augsburg 3-1 (3-0) and is now still in the top group with 15 points. Augsburg are 15th in the table. three points from the relegation places.

On the new turf in the Europa Park stadium, Vincenzo Grifo (34th minute), Philipp Lienhart (37th) and captain Christian Günter (45th + 1) ensured an exhilarating phase before the half-time break with a dream goal. Augsburg’s Philip Tietz (65th) scored for the guests and made the game exciting again. For Freiburg and the new coach Julian Schuster, successor to idol Christian Streich, it was the fifth win after seven match days.

SC with an unchanged starting eleven for the fourth time in a row

The Baden team stayed true to themselves before the game. Schuster used the same starting eleven for the fourth time in a row. On the other hand, Augsburg attacker Samuel Essende returned after his red card suspension, while Chrislain Matsima defended for Keven Schlotterbeck, who injured his thigh.

The guests from Bavaria initially tried to maintain stability. And that paid off. The Freiburg team initially had a bit of a hard time offensively. Captain Günter (17th) tried a long-range shot. But his attempt whizzed past the goal on the left.

After half an hour the home team increased the pace. Maximilian Eggestein once again tested Augsburg’s goalkeeper Nediljko Labrovic from a distance, but the summer newcomer made a strong save.

Grifo and Günter shine

A short time later, the 1.96 meter tall giant was powerless. Top performer Grifo initiated the goal himself, asked teammate Eren Dinkci for the one-two and flicked the ball irresistibly into the bottom right corner of the goal.

And Grifo didn’t think about stopping. Just three minutes later, central defender Lienhart headed the score for the sports club after the Italian international’s corner cross. Günter probably didn’t want to let his team-mate take all the glory and scored a remarkable long-range goal from around 25 meters to make it 3-0.

After the exhilarating end of the first half, things became much more leisurely in the second half. Freiburg’s defense acted too carelessly when Augsburg’s attacker Tietz shortened the score. After that, goalkeeper Noah Atubolu prevented the next goal from being conceded several times. Towards the end of the game, the SC slowed down more and more and thus completed the overall well-deserved victory.
