A tough decision from the Norwegian skiing star: “I’m making a real change”

Pål Golberg is aiming for the spring WC home games.

Cross-country skiing norwegian star Paul Golberg has already been one of the best sprinters in the world for years, but in the coming season the skier plans to make a significant change.

Golberg, 34, intends to skip all World Cup sprint races as he aims to be at his sharpest in Trondheim’s World Cup skiing.

“This is the first winter when I make a real change. I’m not going to prioritize sprint races, so there will be significantly fewer races. My goal is to train more during the season, and hopefully I would be able to raise the bar a bit through that,” Golberg said.

According to Golberg, something special would have to happen to see him on the starting line in the World Cup sprint during the season.

“I will probably participate in the traditional sprint in Beitostölen (in November before the start of the World Cup), but last season the fast pace of the competition was not good for me. This season, my sights are on the highest 10 kilometers of the World Championships on a traditional and a combined race.”

Sprint races fill a large part of the World Cup calendar, as there are a total of 11 sprint races in the program.

Golberg also predicted that he would not participate in the Tour de Skill.

“If I participate in the Tour, it’s because” I haven’t been fast enough in my opening races.

In 2023, Golberg won gold at the 2023 Planica World Ski Championships in 50 kilometers, relay and pair sprint. In the individual sprint, he placed Johannes Hösflot Kläbon after for World Championship silver.
