Migrants: today in the CDM the decree on safe countries to avoid further Albania cases

After the judiciary stopped the transfer of migrants to Albania, the prime minister announced a decree on safe countries for today. While the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, invites dialogue between the institutions and the CEI lashes out against centers abroad “migrants are not packages”, Meloni intends to move forward by inserting corrective measures to the law to avoid other Albanian cases which saw the return of 12 migrants from Egypt and Bangladesh. These are unsafe countries according to a previous European ruling and therefore cannot be repatriated, even if they arrived in our country irregularly.

The legislative offices of Palazzo Chigi are currently working to prepare the text that will be brought to the table of the Council of Ministers, convened this evening at 6pm. The intent is to provide the Italy-Albania agreement on migrants with a certain legal framework, which leaves no room for interpretations by judges. The points to be addressed: the list of safe countries where migrants can be repatriated and the introduction of a second degree of judgment towards those sentences that do not validate the detention of migrants.

Piantedosi: “It’s important to overcome ideological positions”

“The picture that emerges from the complex investigations confirms the need to continue along the path undertaken by this government to combat with any means, even preventive ones, the unscrupulous criminals who enrich themselves by putting the very lives of migrants at risk”. The Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi reiterated this when commenting on the operation of the Catanzaro Financial Police against illegal immigration. “All this makes it clear – continues the owner of the Interior Ministry – how important it is to overcome the sometimes ideological positions of those who continue to support indiscriminate reception even when this ends up, in fact, favoring the shameful interests of criminal groups”.

EU, in contact with Italy on migrants in Albania

“We are aware of the sentence and are in contact with the Italian authorities.” This was stated by the spokesperson of the European Commission for Internal Affairs Anitta Hipper, commenting on the non-validation of the detention of migrants transferred to Albania by the Court of Rome. “For now we do not have a common list at European level” of safe countries of origin, “it is planned and we are working on it. At the moment the member countries have national lists”, added the spokeswoman.
