“Harvey Weinstein receives treatment for leukemia”

The 72-year-old Weinstein, who underwent emergency heart surgery last month, is being treated for the disease in jail on Rikers Island, the news channel said. Weinstein’s legal team does not want to respond to the messages “for privacy reasons”.

Patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia have too many white blood cells in their blood. The disease develops slowly and can often be suppressed with treatment.

Rapes

In March 2020, Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison for multiple counts of sexual abuse, including rape. Dozens of women had made accusations against Weinstein, who was known as one of the most powerful figures in Hollywood before the scandal broke.

The conviction was overturned in April this year, because Weinstein would not have had a fair trial. He remained in custody anyway, because he was also convicted in another rape case. A new trial is scheduled to begin next month.

Weinstein’s conviction in 2020 was seen as a “historic event.” The revelations about Weinstein’s misconduct sparked the #MeToo movement in 2017.
