Worldcoin eliminates iris scanning and opts for passport verification on platforms such as Zoom and WhatsApp

The Worldcoin company, co-founded by Sam Altmanhas announced a significant change to its digital verification service, removing iris scanning as the primary identification method. From now on, users will be able to verify their identity through their passports on platforms such as Zoom, WhatsApp and Meet, in an effort to improve security and expand their reach.

This change responds to the controversies generated in countries such as Spain and Portugal, where authorities suspended the use of Worldcoin orbs to scan irises in shopping centers. With the new strategy, the company hopes to offer greater confidence to users and adapt to stricter regulations on data protection.

At a recent event held in San Francisco, Altman and Alex Blania, co-founders of the company, revealed that Worldcoin will now be renamed World Network, or simply “World.” The new platform will include features such as World ID Credentials, which allows users to generate digital identities by using a passport with an NFC chip, instead of resorting to eye scanning.

The company has also introduced World ID 3.0, a new version that includes the Deep Face feature, designed to verify identities in video calls. This tool seeks to prevent the use of deepfakes and identity theft, ensuring greater security in digital interactions.

World’s new expansion phase also includes a collaboration with popular applications such as Zoom and Meet, where the digital identity created through its platform will allow users to access without the need for passwords, reinforcing the security of video calls.

On the other hand, the company has implemented a technology called AMPC (Anonymized Multi Party Computation), which ensures a higher level of privacy in the handling of personal data, decentralizing the World ID infrastructure through collaboration with universities.

Currently, World has more than 330 locations worldwide and has verified nearly seven million people. Despite its limited presence in Latin America, Argentina stands out as the country with the highest number of users, with more than 2.2 million registered, according to the newspaper La Nación.
