Many crimes: Intensive offenders in Brandenburg: More young people in focus

In Brandenburg, the number of intensive offenders recorded by the police has recently increased. At the end of 2023, 684 people were registered in these statistics – 102 more than a year earlier, as the Brandenburg Ministry of the Interior announced at the request of the German Press Agency.

No record numbers

However, the numbers are far from maximum values. In 2019, the police counted almost 850 intensive offenders. “The development of the identified intensive crime suspects is fluctuating, especially for the period of the measures in connection with the corona pandemic,” explained the spokesman. After all, there has been a decline in the proportion of intensive offenders identified compared to the number of suspects identified overall over the years.

Increase among young people

These were predominantly male intensive offenders, but 80 women were also there last year. The recent increase in intensive crime suspects has been particularly strong among young people between the ages of 14 and 18. 107 were registered last year. In the previous year there were only 73. For children under 14, the numbers were relatively low, with ten individual cases.

People who are said to have a particularly high level of criminal energy are classified as intensive offenders because they have committed a large number of crimes overall or a large number within a short period of time. “The intensive suspect includes all those suspects who were involved in ten or more crimes in the reporting year,” added the ministry spokesman.
