Victim rescued after being stuck in car for three days following floods in Spain: woman sat next to body of deceased sister-in-law

Civil protection has rescued an elderly woman who had been trapped in a car for three days in flood-hit Spain. The woman spent three days next to the body of her deceased sister-in-law until rescuers found her.

Emergency services in Benetússer, near Valencia, had started removing vehicles blocking the streets in the district on Friday when they heard a woman calling for help. They found an elderly lady in a car blocked in a tunnel. The woman had been sitting next to the body of her deceased sister-in-law for three days.

It was Martín Pérez, president of the Civil Protection in Valencia, who shared the news of the rescue with volunteers on Friday evening. “After three days we found a living person in a car, which means that…” he doesn’t get any further with his explanation, because the volunteers in the room immediately started clapping and cheering. This can be seen in a video that has now been shared on social media.

Another video shows how the elderly woman, wearing a yellow bathrobe and carrying her handbag, was put into an ambulance by several men from the rescue services. It is unclear what her current condition is, but she was immediately taken to hospital for treatment.

Rescue services are still searching for survivors. It is still unclear how many people are currently missing. The figure of 1,900 was announced on Friday, but the authorities are now being very careful with this. In many places, rescue services looking for victims are focusing on cars washed away by the masses of water. Many people tried to flee with their cars when the floods hit the Valencia region, but many were simply surprised by the deluge.
