The decision in one of the closest elections in US history is fast approaching. The big events, the small stories and the things you should know: every day until the elections that will be held on 5.11 we will provide a daily overview of the events of the hour in the hottest race in the world.
1Harris presents: two conflicting campaigns
In recent days, it has been reported in the American media that the campaign of Kamala Harris is publishing ads aimed at Jewish voters and Arab-American voters, with conflicting messages regarding the ongoing war in the Middle East.
CNN reported over the weekend about Facebook ads by the Harris campaign from last month, targeting Jewish voters in Pennsylvania. “I want to be clear – I will always stand up for Israel’s right to defend itself,” Harris says in the ad, which was taken from her speech at the Democratic Party convention. “And I will always make sure that Israel has the ability to defend itself, because the people of Israel must never again face the horrors that the terrorist organization Hamas inflicted on them on October 7, including unimaginable sexual violence and the massacre of young people at a music festival.”
After editing, Harris added: “Know this: I will never hesitate to take any action necessary to protect our forces and our interests against Iran and terrorists supported by Iran.”
At the same time, the Harris campaign launched a separate ad, aimed at Arab-Americans in Michigan, in which it expresses solidarity with the citizens in Gaza. “What has happened in Gaza over the past nine months is devastating,” Harris says in the ad. “We cannot afford to detach ourselves from the suffering, and I will not remain silent.” In another speech that appears in the same ad, Harris says: “Our common humanity requires us to act.” In addition, the video stated that “Vice President Harris is working to end the suffering in Gaza.”
The issue seems to be attracting a lot of attention in Michigan, where Arab-Americans have expressed outrage over the Biden administration’s handling of the Middle East and threatened to withdraw their support for the Democratic candidates.
At the same time, Donald Trump also hopes to gain support among this group of voters, having recently visited the city of Dearborn, Michigan, which has a large Muslim population. Both candidates are also competing to win the support of the significant Jewish population in the key state of Pennsylvania.
2Another controversial statement by Trump
Over the weekend, Trump called former Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney a “radical war hawk”, and was heavily criticized for another statement he made, in which he was understood to be saying she should be assassinated.
In a conversation with Tucker Carlson, the former presenter of the Fox News network, at an event held in Arizona, the former president said of Cheney that “she is a radical war hawk. Let’s put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels aimed at her, okay?”. Later he said: “Let’s see how she feels about it, you know, with the guns pointed at her.” According to him, “They are all hawks. They sit in Washington in a nice building and say, ‘Let’s send 10,000 soldiers straight into the mouth of the enemy.'”
Trump’s supporters claimed that Trump’s point was that those who send soldiers to wars without any personal implications for him should think things through before decisions are made. On the other hand, Harris claimed that this interpretation is incorrect, and that Trump called for an attack on Cheney.
“Trump has stepped up his violent rhetoric about political opponents and, most specifically, implied that guns should be pointed at former Congresswoman Liz Cheney,” Harris told reporters during a campaign rally in Wisconsin.
“This must be grounds for impeachment,” she said. “Anyone who wants to be president of the United States and uses such violent rhetoric is clearly unfit and unfit to be president. Congresswoman Cheney is a true patriot who showed extraordinary courage when she prioritized the good of the country over the good of the party.”
The Attorney General of the state of Arizona, Kris Mays, announced that she is investigating whether the statements constitute a threat to the life of the former congresswoman from Wyoming. “I have already asked my Chief of Criminal Investigations to begin reviewing this statement and analyzing whether it constitutes a threat to life under Arizona law,” Mayes said.
Trump went on to describe Cheney as a “war hawk” during a stop at a coffee shop in Michigan. “She’s a war hawk. She kills people,” Trump said at The Great Commoner Cafe, an Arab-American-owned business in Dearborn.
“If she had to do it herself, if she had to deal with the consequences of the fight, she wouldn’t have done it,” Trump told reporters. “She is actually shameful,” he added. “She was the first to break.”
3For better or for worse: US officials are preparing for the possibility that Trump will return to power
CEOs of leading companies in the American economy are preparing for the possibility of another four years of former President Trump.
According to the report on the Axios website, Trump keeps a list of CEOs and corporations that he believes have harmed him or supported his opponents. Executives in the business world who fear retaliation are trying to maintain good relations with him. “If you supported Kamala Harris, and we didn’t hear from you until after the election, you will have to work hard to To gain trust,” said a Trump adviser to “Washington Foss”.
Senior executives in the US have been leaning toward the Democratic Party for the past two decades, and the vice president’s people point to a line of senior CEOs who support her. Recently 17 of their seniors wrote a column in “Fortune” magazine in which they expressed enthusiastic support for Harris.
The group that signed the column included former LinkedIn CEO Reid Hoffman; former American Airlines CEO Douglas Parker; Former CEO of American Express, Ken Schnault; former CEO of Sony and current chairman of Snap, Michael Linton; and others who led very large publicly traded companies.
Only one of Fortune’s 100 CEOs has publicly endorsed Trump this cycle: Elon Musk. However, few seem ready to start his second presidency on bad terms.
In recent days, Trump has had phone conversations with Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, and with Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai. CNN reported that Trump also spoke with Amazon CEO Andy Jesse. According to the AP news agency, he also spoke with executives at Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos’ space company.
In addition, hedge fund managers believe in a Trump victory. They are directing investments to stocks expected to do better under a Republican administration, such as defense, oil and crypto, according to a report by the Politico news site.
If Harris is elected, many CEOs will likely breathe a sigh of relief, despite opposition to her tax and regulatory plans.
Billionaire Mark Cuban, an ardent supporter of Harris, has recently claimed in several interviews that not all of her plans will be implemented, therefore voting for her is safe and does not contradict the business interest. Others on Harris’ staff have said in recent months that she intends to base her operations on the successes of the Biden administration and improve upon them, so there aren’t many surprises to be expected.
