Art discoveries at Villa Farnesina, presentation and exhibition on 5 November

On November 5th, for the presentation of the recent artistic findings at Villa Farnesina, in Rome, two paintings in storage at the Chamber will also be exhibited to the public. These are works attributed to the workshop of Annibale Carracci, ‘The three theological virtues’ and ‘Faith, Hope and Charity’, owned by the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte and preserved in Montecitorio. They will compose a journey of seventeenth-century works that are inspired by or reproduce the frescoes of Raphael and his collaborators. In particular, in the Loggia of Cupid and Psyche, the two works attributed to the Carracci workshop will be exhibited, which are a reworking of the plumes painted by Giulio Romano, collaborator of the Master of Urbino, to decorate the loggia of the Villa.

The paintings were sent on loan on the occasion of the Study Day entitled “The Seventeenth Century in Villa Farnesina: findings and research”, scheduled at the Accademia dei Lincei on November 5th. On this day the Academy presents new discoveries regarding the seventeenth-century decoration of the villa and the results of research on the layout of the building after 1579, when the Palace was handed over to Cardinal Alessandro Farnese and took the name of “Farnesina”.

The 17th century frescoes discovered in the cavity of the original Chigiano living room of the villa will also be presented, an important discovery for the knowledge of the building and the 17th century decorative phase. The studies are also correlated with the most recent research and valorization projects of two other Farnesian places: Palazzo Farnese and the Horti Farnesiani on the Palatine. The exhibition will be open until February 5, 2025.
