“We are experiencing a deterioration of altruism due to capitalism”

The filmmaker David Pérez Sañudo releases his new feature film in theaters on November 15, ‘The Last Romantics’a “luminous” film, based on the book of the same name by Txani Rodríguez, about the twists and turns that life takes and the second chances that are offered.

“Society today is more individualistic than a few years ago and I believe that this is closely related to a more capitalist model of life.. Now there is a deterioration in altruism and the idea of ​​success is related to individual terms,” ​​said the filmmaker in an interview with Europa Press.

Sañudo assures that he has adapted the novel because of its “complexity” and the challenge of working with a “flammable” material. “It was a challenge for me because the main character is very complex and I had something in my head to say: ‘if I can bring this to the movies, there will be a cool story.’“, he pointed out.

The story addresses sensitive topics such as care, loneliness, nostalgia for past issues or social and work transformation, however, the director relies on humor to connect with the audience and show “the infatuation, fascination and delicacy” of the movie.

“The humor had to be in the film, although there are not many humorous scenes, but it is what contains the luminosity. For me, it was important to fit the idea of ​​the film that I felt and use humor to make the audience understand the beauty of the film.“he explained.

Specifically, the film follows Irune (played by Miren Gaztañaga), a woman who discovers the “luminous” part of her life that until then was off, according to Sañudo. For his part, Gaztañaga recalls, in statements to Europa Press, that when the opportunity came to participate in ‘The Last Romantics’ he “really wanted” to give life to Irune due to the complexity of the character.

“Playing Irune has been a very rich gift because I have expanded the color palette or the work tools I had. Until now, I had had more intense creative experiences at the theatrical level and I was looking forward to a character like that in the audiovisual field,” he said.

The film participated in the last edition of the San Sebastián Festival in the New Directors section. An experience that, for both David Sañudo and Miren Gaztañaga, was very nice and meant a reward for four years’ work. “It was a very nice premiere and we had a great reception from critics. So far everything has been very positive.”assures the director.
