Electric cars are becoming more common in traffic. At the same pace, car dealers’ interest in used electric cars seems to be growing.
In September 2024, the average number of calls per electric car at car dealerships doubled and reached new record numbers in October.
The number of requests for electric cars from car dealerships has grown at a dizzying pace since July. The average number of shouts for electric cars reached record numbers in October, but surpassed the average number of shouts for other types of cars already in July. Sales data from the period 1 January to 31 October 2024 was analyzed by the tendering service for car sales Baana.
The trend is notable also in the sense that the average number of shouts for other car types was also the highest of the year in October.
So why do car dealerships want electric cars in record numbers right now?
The reason is clear: the product is sold at a fair price.
Online car the data studied in the period 1.1.2022–30.9.2024 explains the rise in popularity of electric cars in car dealerships.
The average sales time of electric cars is the second lowest among car types (24 days in September 2024), while it was the highest (33 days) in July. The last time the average selling time of an electric car was this low was almost two years ago.
The sales prices show that the average prices of sold electric cars have dropped significantly compared to other types of cars, whose average prices have remained fairly flat.
The average price of electric cars (approx. 36,000 euros in September) has fallen by around 10,000 euros since the beginning of the year, although it is still clearly the highest of the average prices for car types.
Looking at the total sales of car types, according to Baana, car sales will grow considerably in 2024, regardless of the car type. However, it is worth noting that the total sales of electric cars have grown steadily throughout the year, without a significant drop in total sales. The total sales of other car types fell momentarily during the summer.
“The electric car trend shows clear signs of recovery, even though it was quieter at the time, largely due to the level of interest rates. The data shows that the popularity of electric cars on the private side is increasing. Consequently, car dealerships are currently clamoring for a record number of used electric cars. In the endgame, consumer behavior determines the purchases of car dealerships,” says Baana’s business manager Ville Vähämaa.
