“PAH compounds have the same chemical structures as the building blocks of life,” he says of the university in the bulletin.

“As we learn more about how these molecules were formed and how they travel through space, we also learn more about our own solar system and its life,” says Cooke.

Astronomers estimate that pyrene accounts for about 0.1 percent of the carbon found in the cloud. The number sounds small.

“It’s huge. An incredible carbon sink,” says the chemist Brett McGuire online service Space.comin by. He is an assistant professor of chemistry at MIT University near Boston.

Now astronomers are investigating whether PAH compounds could also be formed in extreme cold. Or do they come from elsewhere in the universe?
