Engie has already earned a billion euros from Belgian nuclear power plants this year

Engie’s nuclear activities – which are the remaining nuclear reactors in our country – have already generated more than one billion euros in operating profit for the French energy giant this year.

Engie’s quarterly figures show that the group achieved 1.073 billion euros in EBIT profit (profit before interest and taxes) from its nuclear activities in the first nine months of the year. This concerns the nuclear reactors Doel 1, 2 and 4 and Tihange 1 and 3. Two reactors – Doel 3 and Tihange 2 – have already been connected to the grid.

The EBIT profit is much higher than the 332 million euros of a year earlier. This is because the inframarginal tax has disappeared. That is the excess profit tax that the Belgian government levied during the energy crisis. That extra levy was abolished in June 2023.

Higher electricity prices and better availability of nuclear power plants (88.3 percent) also helped to increase EBIT profit.
