Former professional soccer player Christian Gentner will apparently be the new sports director at Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart. As “Bild” reports, the 39-year-old will be officially promoted to VfB this week and will receive a contract until 2027. Gentner, who became German champion with the Swabians in 2007, was previously head of the licensed player department in Stuttgart. The position of sports director has been vacant since July 1st. Fabian Wohlgemuth, who was promoted to sports director, had previously filled the position.
Gentner’s promotion probably comes as no surprise. As “Stuttgarter Nachrichten” and “Stuttgarter Zeitung” report, Wohlgemuth said a few weeks ago: “Christian and I have been working closely and in a trusting manner for a long time.”
The former midfielder, who also won the German championship with VfL Wolfsburg in 2009, played 430 Bundesliga games (46 goals) for Stuttgart, Wolfsburg and Union Berlin. He played in 373 competitive games for VfB. Gentner ended his active career at FC Luzern in Switzerland in 2023.
