Helsinki the Canadian shipyard company Davie, which owns the shipyard, announces that it is satisfied with the agreement (Ice Pact) on icebreaker cooperation signed by Canada, Finland and the United States on Wednesday.
According to the company, the agreement provides the historical foundations for the start of icebreaker cooperation between the three countries.
“We have several promising discussions going on in the field of planning and construction work. Ice Pact gives the Helsinki shipyard a unique opportunity to return to the western market and offer its world-leading expertise in the construction of ice-going vessels”, says Davie’s CEO James Davie in the bulletin.
Of all about half of the world’s icebreakers have been built at the Helsinki shipyard. Davie estimates that the shipyard and its Finnish partners will play a key role in the design and construction of advanced icebreakers.
The company announces that it aims to create transatlantic cooperation and strengthen Finnish exports through its international networks. According to Davie, it is the only shipyard company that has a strong presence in all three contract countries, i.e. Canada, Finland and the United States.
According to the company, it also has the world’s largest order book for heavy icebreakers in Canada’s national shipbuilding strategy. In addition, it also prepares shipbuilding operations in the United States with the US administration.
“This international cooperation is expected to bring new opportunities to the Finnish maritime industry ecosystem and accelerate Finnish innovations”, the company estimates.
The agreement signed today does not in itself create new orders, but according to Davie, close dialogue and cooperation between the industry and operators is now needed to map out the possibilities.
