The Paris prosecutor’s office demanded a five-year (three suspended) prison term for Marie Le Pen, the leader of the parliamentary faction of the “National Unity” party, and a fine of 300,000 euros in the case of embezzlement of funds from the European Parliament in favor of her party, BFMTV TV channel reports.
The prosecution also demanded that the politician be deprived of the right to be elected to state bodies for five years.
In addition to Le Pen, 20 members of “National Union” are also involved in the case. The prosecutor’s office demanded imprisonment for them as well.
If the court charges, Le Pen will not be able to run in the elections. Earlier, he announced his intention to run for the French presidential elections in 2027.
In response, the politician stated that the prosecutor’s office wants to limit the French people’s right to choose in this way.
The court hearings in the case of Le Pen and her teammates began in Paris in September. According to the investigators, the accused hired helpers in the European Parliament in order to embezzle money for “National Unity”.
