The APEC summit concludes in Lima with the presence of Xi and Biden

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum 2024 concluded this Saturday in Lima, the Peruvian capital, in a meeting that was attended by prominent international leaders, such as Joe Biden and Xi Jinping.

The leaders gathered in Lima closed the summit with a family photo in which Xi, Biden, the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, were present; the Prime Minister of Thailand, Paethongtarn Shinawatra; the Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese; the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Christopher Luxon, the President of Chile, Gabriel Boric, or the host, the Peruvian President, Dina Boluarte. It has also been announced that South Korea will host APEC 2025.

Boluarte precisely closed the summit highlighting the “enormous impact on the international positioning of our country” and the strengthening of Peruvian foreign policy “in one of the most important and dynamic regions such as the Asia-Pacific.”

Boluarte recalled that he has met with Biden, who has visited Peru for the first time, and with other leaders from the region. “We have reinforced our image as a country open to trade,” he stressed.

Boluarte has also highlighted the joint ministerial declaration of the ministers of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the “Lima Roadmap to promote the transition to the formal and global economy.” “It is considered the most important deliverable of APEC Peru 2024. This instrument will serve as a public policy recommendation to promote the gradual reduction of high levels of informality with a comprehensive approach,” he highlighted.

The meeting has served to facilitate various bilateral meetings, such as the meeting held on Friday between Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and Chinese President Xi Jinping, who expressed their intention to foster “a mutually beneficial strategic relationship.”

Ishiba conveyed to Xi Japan’s “deep concern” about the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands dispute and about Chinese military activity in the area. Xi, for his part, has highlighted that both are important countries in Asia and in the world and has expressed his willingness to “collaborate.”
