Nagelsmann has brought back the desire to win

The German fans could hardly stop celebrating. There was one goal after the other to celebrate on Saturday evening because the German national soccer team once again showed themselves to be extremely enthusiastic and energetic in their 7-0 win against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The second half had only been going on for a few minutes when the fans in Freiburg were already chanting “Oh, how beautiful that is!” Florian Wirtz had just made it 4-0. Euphoria and Nations League? That didn’t really fit together in the past. But that has changed since national coach Julian Nagelsmann took office in October last year: German footballers now absolutely want to win even the less important games.

Just a year ago, the team had reached its absolute lowest point in recent years when it lost to Turkey and Austria. Every failure, no matter how small, caused great uncertainty among the entire DFB team. The fun of football is now back. And the main reason for this is Julian Nagelsmann.

The national coach has done a great job this year. In addition to further footballing development, Nagelsmann has, above all, given the German team back its self-confidence without allowing for arrogance.

Even in this game in the Nations League, which wasn’t all that important from a sporting point of view – progress was already certain before kick-off – each of his players gave their all, even the substitutes wanted to show off. The fact that this is the case is due to Nagelsmann himself, who sets a good example. In Freiburg, the 37-year-old stood on the sidelines for a long time even after the clear lead and loudly pointed out little things to his team that they could do even better.

It is this constant striving for more that apparently inspires the DFB team. Or as Nagelsmann calls it: the greed to win. Not so long ago, Germany would have been more likely to embarrass themselves than to inspire in a game like the one on Saturday evening.

But now there is a certainty with which Germany can also solve the easier tasks. This gives hope for a successful future.
