Why are jobs left vacant? Half of companies do not find candidates with adequate training

Las training deficiencies and “the financial aid that discourage the active search for employment” are the two main obstacles to fill jobs in Spanish companies, according to the Business Competitiveness Observatory of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce.

In general terms, given that it is a phenomenon that is repeated in all sectors, more than 53% of Spanish companies have problems finding profiles whose training and experience fit their jobs, a difficulty that worsens the smaller the company.

On the other hand, around 49% of Spanish companies consider that financial aid is a brake on filling vacancies. Respondents allege that potential job seekers are supported by subsidies and this discourages an active job search. In this regard, the Observatory points out that facing this obstacle is more complicated for small companies.

Strikingly, the reduced wages are not positioned among the most relevant difficulties for companies that want to hire: only the 20% of companies Spaniards consider that this is a very relevant obstacle to filling vacancies, a proportion (20.4%) that is repeated for those who think the opposite. Yes it is a problem, beyond the salary, the absence of favorable working conditions, that he 28,7% of companies see it as relevant when recruiting employees.

The vision of the sector

The study by the Chamber of Commerce, which collects the responses of 2,039 Spanish companies of all sectors and sizes, reflects how the search for employees is affected by the underground economy for him 25,7% of the companies. This aspect changes weight depending on the sector where the activity is carried out, because in the case of constructionthe underground economy is the second reason for not finding employees. The first is, again, the lack of training.

On the other hand, in the commercial and service sectorthe fact that there are no favorable working conditions (beyond the salary) is a great disadvantage when it comes to attracting talent, even more so than having reduced salaries. However, this sector also considers that the lack of employee training is the main reason for vacancies not being filled.

Languages, the pending task of employees

The Observatory also collects the assessment of employee performance from the company’s perspective. In this sense, the languages are the weakness of 39.5% of staff.

Despite this, companies’ assessment of the performance of their workers is mostly positive, and they consider their competencies in terms of digital and personal skills, commercial and marketing capacity, communication, and their technical knowledge of the job to be adequate. The latter are, furthermore, the aspect in which employees best stand out for the 28.6% of companies.
