Biden will announce a donation of US$50 million to the Amazon Fund

The American government announced that President Joe Biden, visiting this Sunday (17) in Manaus (AM), will announce an additional resource of US$50 million (R$289.5 million) for the Amazon Fund, to collaborate with conservation of the forest and tackling the climate crisis.

The amount adds up to the same amount promised by Biden, in February 2023, during President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s visit to the country.

Another measure announced by the American government concerns a cooperation agreement between Development Finance Corporation (DFC) and BNDES, to build a laboratory of nature-based solutions to combat timber trafficking, in addition to actions that can promote support for indigenous peoples, and against illegal mining in the Amazon.

An Amazon reforestation project to support the large-scale planting of native tree species in degraded pastures in Brazil was also announced.

The document also indicates support for the creation of the Tropical Forest Finance Facilitya new fund of US$125 billion (R$724.55 billion) for the conservation of the most important forests in the world.

“Today, as part of his historic trip to the Amazon, President Biden will announce that the United States has fulfilled its historic promise to increase U.S. international climate financing to more than $11 billion per year by 2024,” the statement also said.

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, landed early this afternoon at Manaus international airport. This is the first time that a sitting North American president has visited the Amazon rainforest region.

The Democrat’s agenda does not include a meeting with President Lula this Sunday (17). The bilateral meeting should only take place during Biden’s participation in the G20, which takes place in Rio de Janeiro until Tuesday (19).
