This vote will decide the future of the EU – “The Dems have been completely lost”

The European Parliament will vote on Wednesday in Strasbourg, France, to approve the new Commission.

Even though the background is historically fierce bickering between the political groups in the parliament, it is still believed that the commission will get the support of the majority in the parliament.

The key to the agreement was the agreement negotiated by the middle groups of the parliament last week, where the EPP, S&D and Renew found each other after bitter arguments and accusations and agreed to cooperate for the next five years.

Member of the Left Alliance Merja Kyllönen describes the current state of the EU Parliament by stating that “sins are forgiven and the journey continues, but I will never forget”.

The Greens were not qualified to compete with the three pro-European parties, which made the group nervous.

Chairman of the Commission Ursula von der Leyen however, announced on Monday that he would appoint a long-term politician of the Greens, Philippe Lambertinas an environmental advisor. Partly because of this game move, a narrow majority of the Green group will vote to approve the commission.

A strong climate policy?

The Greens, Ville Niinistösays he will vote with the majority of the group in favor of approving the commission, because Ukraine needs support, the rise of the extreme right must be countered and “strong climate policy” must be promoted.

“Europe now needs a functioning commission in these difficult world times”, reasons Niinistö.

According to him, von der Leyen has personally assured the Greens that he will act for the climate and rule of law goals that are important to them.

The greens’ fresh meppi Maria Ohisalo still not going to give the green light to the new commission. On Tuesday, Ohisalo justified his voting decision in Strasbourg by saying that he does not have confidence that the Commission will do what it has promised, especially in climate and environmental issues.

Also the MEPs of the left-wing coalition, Lee AnderssonMerja Kyllönen and Jussi Saramo vote against the commission’s approval. They consider the future commission to be the most far-right in history.

The MEPs of the Left Alliance also believe that the center-right EPP is starting to slip away from the cooperation of pro-European parties and is more often allied with the far and extreme right.

The left coalition Saramo wonders how the Democrats (S&D) agreed to the deal, even though the EPP has already cooperated with the far and extreme right.

In addition, the EPP has pulled the Democrats’ star commissioner candidate from under the keel and defended the far-right candidate’s vice-presidential position.

“The Democrats have been completely lost,” says Saramo.

A commission is needed

SDP:n meppi Eero Heinäluoma says that “Europe needs a commission, even if a little more problematic, than no commission at all”.

He believes that the new commission will be approved on Wednesday.

Another demarimeppi also has the same opinion Maria Guzenina.

For Heinäluoma, it is important that the pro-European coalition maintains its cooperation. However, he also fears that within the EPP group there is pressure to cooperate with the far right.

According to Heinäluoma, the future parliamentary cooperation will not be a “love marriage”.

“There will be quite a lot of wrinkles in love and a very painful five years,” he predicts.

The confused election situation in Germany casts a shadow

The meppi of basic Finns Sebastian Tynkkynen intends to vote against the new commission, even though his group ECR won one of the six important vice-presidential positions in the commission after a long struggle.

“I myself vote against the commission. It is not certain whether the commission will pass,” Tynkkynen predicts.

He is suspicious of the line of the new commission, especially in climate policy and immigration policy.

“There is not a lot of faith in the fact that the right kind of performances will be received.”

Tynkkynen estimates that EPP will cooperate even more with other right-wing groups, especially ECR.

The EPP group and the coalition are represented Mika Aaltola, Aura Salla and Pekka Toveri vote to approve the commission.

So do the members of the Renew group in the center Elsi Katainen and Katri Kulmuni and rkp Anna-Maja Henriksson.

Kulmuni considers the EPP’s recent actions, especially the tearing open of the already approved deforestation regulation, a “pig-like trick”.

According to Henriksson, the background of the EPP’s pain is the upcoming German elections.

Despite all the bickering, Katainen of the center believes that the parliament will approve the new commission on Wednesday.

“The vote may be tight, but I believe that the new commission will be approved,” Katainen estimates.

On Wednesday morning, von der Leyen will first present the members of the commission and the program to the parliament. The vote will take place after the debate, around 1 pm Finnish time.
