At least 20 dead in Indonesia due to floods and landslides due to heavy rains

At least 20 people have died in the province of North Sumatra, in Indonesia, due to the heavy rains that have been occurring in the Asian country since last Sunday and have caused floods and landslides.

The National Disaster Management Agency reported this Tuesday the balance of fatalities in a note on its website in which it broke down the data by locality.

Karo regency is the most affected with ten deaths, while in Padang Lawas four people have died due to landslides.

Four people have died in Deli Serdang and two people are reported missing due to “flash” floods, which has also caused two deaths in Tapanuli.

According to the agency’s data, a total of six homes have been seriously affected and damage has occurred to public facilities such as schools and places of worship.

The Agency has asked local authorities as well as citizens to remain vigilant and prepared for possible new risks.

“The weather forecast shows the need to be alert for torrential rains accompanied by lightning and strong winds in the areas of Deli Serdang, Karo, Langkat, Padang Lawas, Tapanuli and Binjai,” the agency warned.
