Media: Italy seeks suspension of Netanyahu’s arrest warrant

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani criticized the decision of the International Criminal Court to issue arrest warrants for representatives of the Israeli leadership. The politician called this decision political, not legal.

“Israel is a democratic state. It is unrealistic to draw a parallel between its leaders and the leaders of terrorists. This decision prolongs the war, since it actually means support for Hezbollah and Iran, which do not seek to end it,” he said at a meeting of G7 foreign ministers. .

He expressed hope that the G7 countries will develop a common position regarding the court’s decision. According to the newspaper Il Messaggero, Italy is trying to have the order suspended on the grounds that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is a key figure in the Middle East peace process.

At the same time, Tajani did not say that Italy would refuse to execute arrest warrants for Israeli politicians if they ended up on Italian soil.
