They propose budget expansions to science, education and culture in San Lázaro

The Culture, Education and Science commissions of the Chamber of Deputies proposed expansions in these items in the Federation’s Expenditure Budget and criticized the cuts planned for next year.

The Education Department proposed granting an additional 71,466 million pesos to the 450,887 million that the project provides, because although it is one of the areas with the most allocations, it would lose 1.5 percent in real terms. The Science Department proposed an expansion of 2,599 million.

In the Culture Commission, the opposition regretted that the increases are marginal, of 0.35 percent in real terms in the programs of the National Fund for the Promotion of Crafts, support for culture, artistic and cultural scholarships, stimuli for creation, recognitions to the trajectories and promotion of Mexican cinema.

According to the analysis that was presented yesterday in that commission, for the application of the Federal Copyright Law there is a decrease of 0.3 percent in real terms.

On the other hand, the cultural development program has an increase of 308 million pesos over the 3,915 million authorized for this year, that is, 4.24 percent in real terms.

In turn, the Ifigenia Martínez Center for Public Finance Studies presented an analysis of spending for culture. Researcher Dulce Nájera explained that although by 2025 there is a 30.8 percent decrease in the sector’s budget, it is mainly due to the completion of the Chapultepec Project, the reconstruction of temples affected by the 2017 earthquake and the acquisition of land in areas archaeological sites surrounding the Mayan Train.

However, the cut will also affect higher and postgraduate education services, the protection and conservation of cultural heritage, cinematographic, cultural and artistic educational services.

As for the U283 program, Promotion of Mexican Cinema, only 12.5 million pesos are foreseen.

The Science Commission highlighted that in branch 38, humanities, sciences, technologies and innovation, a significant reduction is observed, since in 2024 the assigned budget was 61 thousand 372.2 million pesos and for next year 33 thousand 295.9 are considered millions.

This cut is mainly explained by a decrease of 6,64.7 million pesos for the Scientific Research, Development and Innovation Program, a real loss of 10.4 percent in contrast to the one approved in 2024.
