The Polish referee Szymon Marciniak will be in charge of refereeing this Tuesday the match of the sixth day of the league phase of the Champions League between Atalanta and Real Madrid at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo (9:00 p.m.), while the French Benoît Bastien will do the same on the same day in the match between Girona and Liverpool in Montilivi (6:45 p.m.).
Marciniak, 43, will lead a match for the white team in the top continental competition for the eighth time, with which the Spaniards have a record of three wins, two draws and two losses. In addition, they also fell with him on the field in the final of the European Super Cup of the 2018-19 season against Atlético (2-4).
In ‘Champions’, Real Madrid won with Marciniak as main referee in the second leg of last year’s semi-finals against Bayern Munich (2-1); in the 2021-22 group stage against Sheriff Tiraspol (0-3); and against Roma in the second leg of the round of 16 of the 2015-16 campaign (2-0).
However, they lost to Manchester City in the semi-final second leg of the 2022-23 season (4-0) and to Chelsea in the quarter-final second leg of the 2021-22 season (2-3). The draws were against Tottenham (1-1) and Borussia Dortmund (2-2) in the 2017-18 and 2016-17 group stages, respectively.
For his part, the Frenchman Benoît Bastien, 41, will deliver justice in the clash in which Girona will host the Premier League leader, Liverpool, at Montilivi.
