OpenAI’s long-awaited release of Sora

The news had been in the air for a while and only the official announcement from OpenAI was awaited: Sora’s release is a reality. The company made it official during its 12-day event for the presentation of the new products. What are we talking about? Of an artificial intelligence model to generate videos from written texts (text-to-video). A tool that could revolutionize the work of many creatives and which, in recent months, has caused a lot of talk, especially after its presentation last February. It is currently available on the official website for ChatGPT subscribers but, for now, only in the United States and other countries (not yet in Europe). For us Italians, therefore, we will still have to wait. It was Sam Altman himself who underlined how the launch, on this side of the ocean, could take some time.

The OpenAI package also includes a more updated version full of opportunities, called Sora Turbo. Its features go from video generation to image animation, through the various remixes of films and similar content. Currently, with a ChatGPT Plus subscription, you can generate up to 50 videos at 720p resolution. With ChatGPT Pro, at a cost of $200 per month, unlimited generations and up to 500 priority videos with 1080p resolution were included. The most expensive plan also allows subscribers to download videos without logos or symbols and perform up to five exports at once. OpenAI allows those who have not subscribed to be able to explore videos generated by other users.

The company then highlighted a tool called “storyboard” that allows you to generate videos based on a sequence of prompts, as well as the ability to transform photos into videos. The focus remains on some specific and sensitive components. Before uploading content to Sora, you are asked to confirm the absence of minors, explicit or violent content and copyrighted materials. The warning is clear: “misuse of media uploads” could result in a ban or suspension of your account.

The Verge reports the words of Rohan Sahai, project manager, during the live streaming. “We want to prevent illegal activity on Sora, but we also want to balance that with maximum creative expression. We know it will be an ongoing challenge, we might not get it perfect on day one. We’re starting a little conservatively, so if our moderation doesn’t quite succeed, just give us feedback.”
