Russia is negotiating with the new Syrian authorities about maintaining its military bases

Russia is negotiating with the new Syrian authorities about maintaining two of its military bases in the country. TASS reported this with reference to its source familiar with the progress of the negotiations.

“Moscow is currently negotiating with representatives of the new authorities on maintaining its presence in Syria and the previous status of Russian military bases in Tartus and Latakia. <…> The Russian side has secured temporary security guarantees, so military bases are operating as usual,” the agency’s interlocutor said.</…>

The day before, Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Mikhail Bogdanov said that Russian bases continue to be located on Syrian territory and no other decisions have been made yet. According to him, everyone proceeds from the fact that the fight against terrorism in the Middle East region is not over.
