Syria: these families who remain hopeful of finding their missing loved ones

This Friday, December 13, at the Mezzeh military airport in Damascus (Syria), there were dozens of them meticulously inspecting identity documents scattered on the ground. These families remain hopeful of finding missing loved ones, held in prisons under government control. These detention centers were used by Bashar al-Assad to eliminate those suspected of deviating from the ruling party line.

A woman searches for her brother who has been missing for 13 years, while a man searches for three people. “They claim to have released the prisoners, but we have seen nothing. We will eventually lose hope,” he says. Another resident from Manjib, Abu Mohammed, is looking for three missing people: “I turned heaven and earth to find him. I have been to Saidnaya prison, to Al Mujtahid hospital, I have been to Harasta, I have been everywhere. Now I was told there were IDs and I needed to take a look. So here I am. I’ve been looking since this morning, but I still haven’t found anything. »

Near the airport, local officials discovered bags containing human remains and burned clothing.
