Syria’s jihadist leader proposes a review of the Security Council peace resolution to the UN

The leader of the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al Sham and Syrian strongman, Ahmed Hussein al Charaa (also known by his nom de guerre, Abu Mohamed al Golani), requested this Sunday in Damascus the United Nations special envoy for the country, Geir Pedersen, to reconsider the current terms of Security Council resolution 2254, the guidelines set at the time by the international community to end the Syrian conflict, to adapt it to the new reality of the country.

United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254 was adopted unanimously on December 18, 2015 and calls for a ceasefire and a political solution to end a civil war in Syria that the HTS considers over.

In a statement published by the group on its social network account in the political scenario, which make it necessary to update the resolution to adapt it to the new reality.

The “new reality” that Al Golani mentions is the end of the Al Assad dynasty, which ended last Sunday with the taking of Damascus by the alliance of armed opposition groups led by HTS, which has placed one as prime minister of the country. of its most prominent leaders in its stronghold province of Idlib, Mohamed al Bashir.

The international community is reacting without pause, but cautiously, to this new administration led by a group that continues to be considered by the United States as a terrorist organization due to its original links with Al Qaeda. Since coming to power, Al Golani has tried to gain the trust of the international community with a moderate speech that he repeated this Sunday before Pedersen.

The HTS leader has commented, according to the group, “the need to cautiously and precisely address the transition stages and rehabilitate institutions to build a strong and effective system”, in addition to “providing a safe environment for the return of refugees and provide economic and political support for it”, always “under the supervision of specialized teams, so that they can be carried out in the best possible way”.

THE UN ADVOCATES THE END OF SANCTIONS BUT LEAVES IT IN THE HANDS OF THE US AND THE EU

Upon his arrival this Sunday in Damascus, Pedersen has advocated for a quick end to the sanctions currently weighing on the country – issued at the time against the regime of already deposed former president Bashar al Assad – to facilitate the political transition and solution. of the enormous challenges facing the country.

“We have to make sure that this aspect is resolved quickly. Let’s hope that the sanctions end soon, so that we can really see a mobilization around the reconstruction of Syria,” the envoy said.

Pedersen, in this regard, recalled that the decision is in the hands of the United States and the European Union, as responsible for imposing sanctions that have nothing to do with the United Nations.
