Wenzhou’s revolutionary spherical robot to support urban police

In the Chinese city of Wenzhou, China, appeared, for the first time, alongside a team of special police officers a spherical robot, nicknamed “agile roly-poly”. According to what was reported by the Chinese Xenhua agency, the robot weighs 160 kilograms and has a diameter of 0.8 meters, designed for close combat situations, including anti-terrorism interventions, is equipped with police equipment and is capable of reaching 30 kilometers per hour in just 2.5 seconds and can operate continuously for 10 hours or travel 120 kilometers.

The team behind it founded the startup Rotunbot in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, and formed an international team for its further development. A promotional video that went viral shows the spherical robots in action during a patrolidentifying and pursuing illegal intruders, coordinating with each other and using tools such as nets to capture suspects. The spherical robot was initially conceived to navigate the extreme temperature conditions of the planet Mercury.

Thanks to an internal pendulum moved by a motor that oscillates around the nucleus of the sphere, The police robot features a fibreglass-reinforced polymer shell and has been designed to be protected from the elements, allowing it to maneuver effortlessly on both land and water. It can operate at temperatures down to -30 degrees Celsius and is impact resistant up to 4 tonnes, withstanding drops from heights of up to one meter without suffering damage.
