Thousands of earthworms crawled onto the road surface and on the walls of people’s houses in Vung Tau, after days of heavy rain.
On the morning of December 14, Mr. Nguyen Dang Khoa, in Ward 12, witnessed thousands of earthworms crawling on the wall in front of the gate and entering his yard. The road in front of Mr. Khoa’s house also had a herd of worms moving in large numbers.
Mr. Khoa said he has lived in this area for many years, but this is the first time he has witnessed earthworms appearing in large numbers after the rains lasting two days. “I used a hose to spray them out. By noon there were still a few worms crawling on the ground,” Mr. Khoa said.

Ms. Vo Thi Thu Hong, Vice Chairwoman of Ward 12 People’s Committee, said that this phenomenon was recorded by the locality as occurring in an empty land area where only three people lived.
According to Ms. Hong, this place was previously a swampy area, then it was leveled. The past few days have been raining a lot, causing flooding, causing “worms to have difficulty breathing or some reason” to crawl up. Other places in the area did not record this situation.

Another possibility is that rainwater in the soil harms the worms in some way. For example, when rain is acidic, or when harmful chemicals such as heavy metals are released.
