Uayki, a Peruvian digital library that works without Internet and can use solar energy

Although there are more people using Internet In the world, access to this technology continues to be a problem in many regions, in addition to the quality of the information. But there are projects like Uayki that can help solve this lack of connectivity.

This is a Peruvian project worked on by economist Karim Rifai, who was considered on the list of “35 Innovators under 35 years old” by the MIT Technology Review in Spanish.

The digital library brings together more than two million files, which include digital books, audiobooks, podcasts, videos, entertainment and certified courses, reported the Andina agency, and does not require the Internet to function.

We are talking about a comprehensive wireless digital connectivity system that has already been in development for eight years. Today it operates in 16 regions of the country and also in Guatemala. It will soon arrive in Africa (Equatorial Guinea) and has plans to expand in Brazil and Argentina.

The name of this service is Uayki, a recently popular word that comes from Quechua and means brother or friend.

“We have a technology that involves hardware and software. Uayki is a kit like a very small box that once turned on can even work with solar energy. It fits in the palm of my hand, is portable and consumes minimal power,” Rifai told the news agency.

The interesting thing is that it works as if it were a WiFi signal. That is, as explained by the Peruvian economist, it has a coverage area of ​​approximately a football field and can connect users at high speed so that they can navigate without problems.

This system is compatible with any Android cell phone, Apple, tablets, laptops, desktop computers up to 10 years old.

Another detail is that it allows you to control the quality of information, one of the problems of the Internet. “40% of Internet traffic is pornography, social networks, online gambling, content aligned with morbidity or violence,” says Rifai. This is what is avoided in an educational system, and users can personalize the content.

Uayki can cost around $5,000 to $7,000 and has a shelf life of more than five years. The system can be activated in any location and its information can be updated.
