Death penalty carried out in USA: cannibal executed on birthday

His defense lawyers had tried to avert the death penalty. They argued that Underwoods had serious mental illnesses, including autism and post-traumatic stress disorder. He also has a history of abuse himself.

But the prosecution countered that these diagnoses could not explain the horrific crime. “Underwood is dangerous because he is smart, organized and driven by deviant sexual desires rooted in harming others,” the prosecution wrote in its plea agreement.

Prosecutors did not believe it was his mental illness that drove him to the brutal murder. For his last meal, the cannibal ordered chicken steak with mashed potatoes, a cheeseburger and fries.
