Maduro announces constitutional reform in Venezuela

The dictator of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, announced this Thursday (19) that he formed a team to prepare a “constitutional reform” in the country.

“I formed a team with great international advisors, great national advisors, to think, together with our people, about a major constitutional reform that will further democratize Venezuelan society and empower citizens,” said Maduro during an official event.

“We are full of great ideas, we are imbued with a great feeling of transformations, of changes”, stated the dictator, who did not detail what changes this reform will seek to promote in the Constitution of Venezuela.

In 2017, Maduro called elections for a National Constituent Assembly, which ended up not drafting a new Magna Carta, but took over the functions of the Venezuelan Legislature elected in 2015, which had an opposition majority.

Finally, the constituent was dissolved in 2020, the year in which a Legislature dominated by Chavismo was elected, with the opposition’s decision to boycott the election.
