In the North, salaries are up to 50% higher than in the South

Agile salary differences among private employees of the Nord and colleagues of Sud are very obvious: if the former receive a paycheck of approximately 2 thousand euros gross per monththat of the seconds, however, touches i 1.350. Basically in the north you earn on average almost 50%; equal, in monetary terms, to +8,450 euros gross per year. It detects it Cgia of Mestrewhich carried out a salary analysis. For this month of December, obviously, the spread also concerns the thirteenth month’s salary which is paid in these days. And although the wage cages were abolished in 1972, over 50 years of application of the National Collective Labor Agreements (CCNL) has not mitigated the marked wage differences between the Italian regions, even if the objective, in principle, was achieved only at an intra-sector level.

It is clear, explains the note from the CGIA of Mestre, that these wage inequalities are very marked linked to the cost of living and productivity which are significantly higher in the North than in the South; to the fact that the average salary values are negatively affected by the presence of fixed-term contracts, which gravitate in particular in the South and to the concentration of multinationals, large industrial groups and credit/financial/insurance institutions which, compared to SMEs, provide salaries heavier, but are not evenly distributed throughout the boot. The presence of these realities, in fact, is found, in particular, in the large urban areas of the North.

In 2023, the gross wage paid to the 17.3 million private employees in Italy reached 411.3 billion euros: equivalent to an average gross monthly salary of 1,820 euros, 3.5% more than in 2022 , even though inflation, again last year, grew much more, 5.7 percent to be precise. Finally, it should be noted that over 60% of the total amount of wages paid in the country were paid to workers in the North.

Following the Decree issued by the President of the Republic, Giovanni Gronchi, since 1960 all Italian employees have received a double salary in the month of December. Therefore, at the usual monthly rate the thirteenth is addedwhich allows beneficiaries to end the year with greater economic stability. In relation to the net amount paid monthly, the Christmas bonus is slightly lower, since the level of taxation applicable on the latter is higher than that on the ordinary salary.

Furthermore, underlines the CGIA of Mestre, this year there is very positive news: in recent days 4.6 million employed workers with a gross income of less than 28,000 euros and at least one dependent child are receiving a bonus (one-off ) of 100 euros net. During the crisis periods of 2008/2009 and 2012/2013, numerous small and micro businesses, due to a lack of liquidity, paid the Christmas bonus to their employees with serious delay, sometimes well beyond the first months of the following year.

This year, however, there do not appear to be any problems and so far, apart from some full-blown crisis situations, no particular critical issues have been reported in the payment of the thirteenth salary, even in sectors that have suffered a significant slowdown in production; such as the automotive supply chain, the fashion sector, wood-furniture and mechanics. If these days the thirteenth is paid regularly and in any case no later than Christmas Eve, many small and medium-sized manufacturing companies in the sectors most in difficulty have decided to suspend activity from next Tuesday until the Epiphany.

The absence of orders has in fact induced many entrepreneurs to close the gates of their factories for about fifteen days, thus allowing their collaborators to take advantage of the holidays accumulated in the previous months, but not yet enjoyed. Confident that with the new year the winds of crisis that have blown in recent months will give way to good weather.

That is, Parma with a gross paycheck of 2,144 euros, Modena with 2,129 euros, Bologna with 2,123 euros and Reggio Emilia with 2,072 euros.
