Mussolini case, the sports prosecutor wants to see clearly. Juve Stabia, "we are calm"

The celebration of Juve Stabia fans for the first professional goal by Romano Floriani Mussolini, great-grandson of the Duce and son of former MEP Alessandra, becomes a coincidence. As is widespread custom, the stadium had spelled out his surname after the goal that resulted in the 1-0 success over Cesena last Sunday, but according to some observers there were those who accompanied the shout with an outstretched arm in the Roman salute.

A FIGC spokesperson told AFP that the federal prosecutor’s office will compile a report on the episode which will be sent to the Serie B sports judge for possible measures. The right-back on loan from Lazio, who will turn 22 on January 27, bears the surname of both his father (former officer of the Guardia di Finanza) and his mother, even if the writing “F. Mussolini” appears on the back of the shirt.

Juve Stabia in a note expressed “absolute tranquility” and denied that there was any political message in the celebration: “For 117 years people have celebrated a goal from their hometown team in Castellammare di Stabia and since stadium has a speaker and a sound system” the audience chants “the surname with emphasis and raising their arms to the sky as a sign of sporting celebration for their favorite team”.

The president of the Campania club, Andrea Lagella, also took a position: “We do not accept exploitation for a golden boy like Romano Floriani Mussolini and the same thing goes for our fans who rejoiced as they always did in the past with any other athlete “. With this victory, Juve Stabia rose to fourth place in the standings, behind Sassuolo, Spezia and Pisa. In the meantime, however, the case has bounced around the foreign media with the Guardian dedicating a report to the story entitled “The fans seem to celebrate the goal of Mussolini’s great-grandson with the Roman salute”.

Romano Floriani Mussolini in an interview given to Gazzetta dello Sport last November said he did not feel the weight of his surname: “My great-grandfather Benito was a very important figure for Italy, but we are in 2024 and the world has changed There will always be some prejudice, but my job has nothing to do with it and it doesn’t matter to me. People will always talk but my mother says not to care.”
