Two dead in Sydney-Hobart sailing regatta

At the Sydney-Hobart Sailing Regatta two participants died. Both crew members were hit by the sail boom in unrelated incidents on their boats, organizers said. The names and nationalities of those who died were not released. According to organizers, the accidents occurred at night.

The victims are a Crew member of the “Flying Fish Arctos” team a member of the “Bowline” crew. According to the press release, the two were independently hit by the main boom of the respective ship and fatally injured. The exact cause is still unclear. The crew members attempted to resuscitate her, but were unsuccessful.

In the press release the organizer writes: “As the accidents are being dealt with by the Australian Water Police and not all family members have been informed, we are unable to provide further details at this time. Our thoughts are with the crews, family and friends of those who died.”
