“Many companies, as well as private individuals, find themselves shipping dangerous goods unawares,” explains Ermanno Vicini CEO of Serpac, a company specialized in the creation, development and sale of packaging and labels for the transport of dangerous goods.

But how? “Normal packaging – continues the expert – is not suitable for shipping these goods, but specific ones are needed, often UN approved, designed, tested and produced in reference to the regulations for the transport of dangerous goods. It should be remembered that depending on the danger of the goods, the quantity and how they will be transported (road, railway, inland waterway, sea or air) it will be necessary to package and signal the shipment with appropriate marks and labels, in accordance with the relevant regulations such as ADR. Especially during the Christmas period, there are several dangerous products that travel. We must not only think about fireworks, the use of which is common in this period, but also about personal perfumes, room fragrances, lithium batteries and the devices powered by them. All these genres require ‘safety’ procedures for their shipment, especially when they do not follow a B2B market but are aimed at a B2C market”.

Let’s imagine, therefore, having to send this type of item from our e-commerce to a private customer, to a beauty salon or from the manufacturer to the distributor. How should we behave to ensure correct management?

“It is essential to comply with the regulations on the transport of dangerous goods. This involves careful management of shipments, respecting regulations on packaging and package labeling and marking. The specific regulations relating to the products to be shipped must be verified and we recommend contacting experts to guarantee the use of adequate and correct packaging. This precaution not only guarantees the safety of goods and people, but also prevents goods from being stopped and fines in the event of checks, guaranteeing punctual deliveries and saving costs”, concludes Ermanno Vicini.
The consumer must pay attention to the packaging even if he decides to return a purchase made online, because otherwise he risks violating the regulations on the transport of dangerous goods, as well as endangering people and risking having the goods blocked.
