South Korea’s parliament meets to vote on the impeachment of the interim president

SEOUL – Reuters South Korea’s parliament began a session today, Friday, which will witness, among its activities, a vote led by the opposition Democratic Party to impeach interim President Han Duk-soo on the grounds that he is accused of aiding those responsible for a brief declaration of martial law by ousted President Yeon Suk-yul. This is the first time ever in the country’s constitutional history that the proposal to remove an interim president has been submitted to a public session for a vote, according to the South Korean Yonhap News Agency. Efforts to impeach Prime Minister Han Duk-soo, who has served as interim president since the vote to impeach Yoon on December 14, threaten to exacerbate the political crisis sweeping the fourth-largest country.
